Making St Andrews easier to get around—safely, sustainably, and with less congestion.

Imagine a St Andrews where walking and cycling are safe and enjoyable, where public transport is reliable and accessible, and where cars no longer dominate the streets. At present, congestion is a major concern, particularly in the town centre, where narrow roads and limited parking space create difficulties for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. The plan prioritises improved cycling and walking infrastructure, better bus services, and a more strategic approach to managing traffic and parking.

A key action is to commission a Town Centre Circulation Plan to ensure that any future changes—such as pedestrianisation, new cycle routes, or improved public transport—are carefully coordinated. A park-and-ride scheme is being explored, potentially transforming the Petheram Bridge car park into a more efficient transport hub. Meanwhile, a 20mph speed limit and new pedestrian crossings will make streets safer for everyone.

For those who cycle, the plan supports the creation of new and safer cycle routes, including a long-awaited Strathkinness to St Andrews cycle path, while a car-sharing scheme led by Transition St Andrews will help reduce private car ownership and emissions. The plan also calls for public EV charging points to be installed in key locations such as South Street, ensuring the town is ready for the transition to electric vehicles.

Additionally, public transport improvements are a priority. There is strong support for better bus services across Fife and into Tayside, as well as a push for better-coordinated bus times to align with train services at Leuchars. Support for the StARLink rail project is also included, which would improve rail connectivity for St Andrews.
