St Andrews Community Council plays an active role in organising and supporting a wide range of events throughout the year that celebrate the town’s rich heritage and vibrant community life.
Notable recent events include the conferment of the Freedom of the Town on legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus, which coincided with the awarding of honorary degrees by the University of St Andrews to golfing greats Sandy Lyle, José María Olazábal, and Lee Trevino. This memorable occasion was marked by both a formal academic ceremony and a public celebration within the town.
The Council also played a key role in the creation and unveiling of the bronze statue of Old Tom Morris, now proudly standing behind the R&A Clubhouse – a lasting tribute to one of the founding figures of modern golf. In addition, the Council led efforts to secure funding for the restoration of the historic bandstand, preserving a cherished community landmark for future generations.
Each year, the Council also hosts the annual Civic Reception, an event that brings together residents and visitors alike to enjoy performances by the local St Andrews Pipe Band and to celebrate the spirit of the town.
