Your Community Action Plan (CAP) is evolving every month. This update shares the progress being made, projects underway and how you can stay connected with shaping the future of St Andrews.

Please note: Paragraph numbers at the end of each update refer to the LPP Action Points

Support 20 mph restriction. success!

This is now in place. We are now monitoring how it is working in practice. (LPP 1.4)

A community wide communication plan

This starts with the launch of this new website for which we all owe a huge debt of thanks to Sandy Mitchell and Neil Cunningham Dobson who have worked tirelessly on this project. It will be further developed through social media in the weeks and months to come. The Community Council is also supporting the generation of a new community platform for news, insights and discussions, to be called the St Andrews Voice. (LPP 3.2)

Outdoor gyms/playparks around the community.

We are in touch with The Links Trust (“SALT”) about reinstating the play area on the West Sands green space. The University has an outdoor gym (located immediately to the left of the Saints Sport Building) that is open to residents 24/7. For details, please see: https://sport.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk/facilities/outdoor-gym/ (LPP 3.4)

Enhance and extend community allotments and parks

Whilst there are no Fife Council managed community allotments currently in the town, there are growing opportunities through StAndEn (Environment), Transition (the University), the Botanic Garden and orchard support in Stanks Park.

We are helping to source additional garden management help for Kinburn Park. Volunteers are very welcome! (LPP 3.5)

Campaign for inclusive health & social care services

We are pleased to report that there is a committee working continuously to retain and increase outpatient services locally in St Andrews Community Hospital (STACH). This is a subject that should concern everyone in St Andrews, especially after the closure of some services at the Adamson Hospital in Cupar and their relocation to St Andrews Community Hospital. (LPP 5.8)

Improve engagement with the St. Andrews business community

We are in regular contact with BID and hope that we will be able to shine a light on businesses and charities, especially those who have had funding through the Community Trust. (LPP 6.3)

Gull management

There has been a lot of publicity recently about the growing concern relating to the impact that gulls have had on towns in Scotland (and St.Andrews is no exception to this). We are actively discussing this with BID but the restrictions that have been put in place by NatureScot are challenging.

You will see signs and posters encouraging people not to feed the gulls. Please also dispose of waste promptly. We all have a duty to manage the problem as best we can, including, for instance, cafes clearing outside tables as quickly as possible after customers leave. This is an important and ongoing project. (LPP New).

You can watch the informative Scottish Parliament debate regarding this issue at Holyrood:

A new Gull Incident Form is available here. Please complete this if you have had issues or observed issues with gulls. We are now collating all data with a view to presenting it to NatureScot in due course.
